Every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. One in 4 women and 1 in 26 men report having experienced completed or attempted rape; about 1 in 4 young girls and 1 in 20 boys experience childhood sexual abuse; and people who experience child sexual abuse are at twice the risk for non-sexual intimate partner violence. More than 80% of those who experience some form of sexual violence report that it was carried out by someone that they know.
April is nationally recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. On Monday, April 1, in a show of solidarity for those who have experienced sexual violence, Cocoon staff and volunteers placed teal ribbons on lamp posts along Louisiana Avenue and around the Municipal Building in Perrysburg. Along with the ribbons, information about The Cocoon’s services will be available, and posters will be displayed throughout the month in businesses throughout the county.
If you or someone you know is experiencing sexual violence, Cocoon advocates are available 24/7 to provide support. They can be reached at 419-373-1730, option #2. Information can also be found at www.thecocoon.org, on Facebook @cocoonwoodcounty and Instagram @thecocoon_woodco.
